Product Engineer

General Summary:

Product Engineer will be responsible for new product development or enhancements projects.   Individual may act as project manager for assigned development projects.   This position interfaces with individuals at all levels in areas such as sales, service, machine shop, purchasing, assembly, testing, quality, order processing and configuration.  The Product Engineer is responsible for the day to day engineering support of the pump product line in accordance with corporate standards and departmental goals and objectives. 


Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct engineering calculations and analysis (FEA, FMEA, torsional, etc) on projects to optimize product quality and minimize cost.
  • Uses methods such as DFMA, DFSS, Rapid Prototyping, and Design of Experiments to optimize product quality and reduce cycle time.
  • Performs design calculations per national codes and specifications, such as Hydraulic Institute, UL, ANSI, etc.  Performs structural and modal finite element analysis FEA of components and assemblies to establish stress levels, deflections and natural frequencies.
  • Support standardization and cost reduction initiatives
  • Coordinates activities with Product Management, Operations and Quality to ensure design suitability for market and manufacturability.
  • Works within cross-functional teams to develop new products and execute cost reduction design projects by establishing project plans and manages projects to timely completion.
  • Responsible for adhering to departmental and project budgets.
  • Field, research and provide answers for corporate engineering support
  • Read, create and modify 2D/3D drawings, specifications, guides, work instructions, procedures, and manuals; Update electronic and manual media (e.g. configurators, excel, ERP, sales selection software, web, binders, drawing vault, guides, brochures, etc.)
  • Develops and maintains design standards.
  • Support assembly and test department; Consultation with sales or order processing on orders; Work all levels of organization as needed in support of product; Participate at quality review meetings and supply disposition on components.   Supports the field service group in troubleshooting field problems.
  • Maintain state of the art level of competency by attending training courses, seminars, workshops, etc. as required; Participate in industry standards or organizations such as but not limited to Hydraulic Institute (HI), Underwriters Laboratory (UL), Factory Mutual (FM), ASME or AWWA.
  • Comment on or participate in industry standards or organizations such as but not limited to Hydraulic Institute (HI), Underwriters Laboratory (UL), or AWWA.   
  • Perform work, promote teamwork and communicate in conjunction with our culture and corporate standards (Safety/Environmental, Quality, Continuous Improvement, Communication, Internal Controls, etc.).


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Able to perform design calculations and analyses (e.g. FEA, Torsional and Seismic, CFD, etc.);
  • Solid understanding of engineering fundamentals.   Able to perform engineering duties in a production, test, and field environment
  • Understanding of pump principals, pump construction, hydraulics, application of products, and accessories a plus
  • Knowledge of international standards a plus, e.g., NFPA, ISO, EN, AWWA, Hydraulic Institute, CE, etc.
  • Task and dead line focused, comfortable with multi-tasking.
  • Proficient using CATIA, 3D modeling/2D drafting, AutoCAD and Adobe Acrobat
  • Excellent verbal and written skills; able to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team; A strong work ethic is highly important including multitasking ability.  Fluent at reading, speaking, & writing English, including technical vocabulary.
  • Proficient using Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint), ERP Systems, Intranet/Internet Navigation
  • May be required to travel to meetings with Customers and to field sites
  • Capable of mobility in a manufacturing environment.
  • Able to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Able to stand or sit for prolonged periods.

Education and Experience:

  • Four year technical or engineering degree or equivalent experience in a manufacturing environment required.  Preferred five (5)+ years of experience.
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written are a must. 
  • Must be self-motivated, possess capabilities to develop short-term as well as long-term abstract processes, possess good judgment and discretion.
  • Knowledge of design processes & tools (e.g.CAD/CAM, Rapid Prototyping, DFMA, FMEA, FEA, CFD etc.).
  • Experience with solid modeling – Catia or SolidWorks preferred.
  • A strong work ethic is highly important including multitasking ability. 
  • Person should be able to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment taking personal responsibility for assignment and product line.

This position requires the incumbent to stay current with the latest technology and participate in skills upgrading.


This position may require up to 10% travel within the USA.
